ThredUP Men's Clothing Rescue Box Review
I’ve been so busy this month that I haven’t had time to shop for inventory at thrift stores. Instead, I purchased a thredUP men’s clothing rescue box to help fill my closet. Check out the rest of this post to see what I got in the men’s clothing rescue box and if it’s worth purchasing one for resale.

Where does thredUP get men’s clothes?
thredUP sells only women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, and handbags. It doesn’t sell men’s clothes, but people sometimes don’t know that and send in men’s clothes anyway.
If someone sends in men’s clothes and has not paid for those items to be returned to them, thredUP keeps the items and either recycles or sells them. That’s how they end up in the men’s clothing rescue boxes.
Rescue boxes and mystery boxes in general have the reputation of being stale items that were unable to be sold. That’s not necessarily the case with this box.
I felt the men’s clothing might be better than the other types of rescue boxes because thredUP didn’t keep all the best items for themselves to sell. The items haven’t been sitting on the website for months unsold showing themselves to be poor sellers.
I also had credits that were going to expire, which would bring down the cost of the box.
How much did the box cost?
The 10-pound box is normally $50 plus shipping. I don’t know why shipping was listed at $5.99 in one place and $6.10 in another. Shipping was $6.10 for me.
I had $20 in credits so I paid $36.10 total for my order. I received 13 items.
$36.10/13 = approximately $2.78 per item
What I received
These are the 13 items I received:
3.1 Phillip Lim for Target suit jacket Small
3.1 Phillip Lim for Target dress pants 30x32
NWT Eddie Bauer fleece vest L
Lululemon jacket XL
NWT Express skinny pants 38x32
The North Face long-sleeve shirt
Levi’s cargo shorts 36
J. Crew plaid button down shirt XXL
J. Crew cashmere sweater M
Bonobos short-sleeve button down shirt S
FootJoy polo shirt L
Hugo Boss jeans
Under Armour pullover M
Things I liked about this box
1 | Good brands
I was happy with the brands of all the items because they’re all brands that have the potential to resell for a profit. In the past, I’ve received rescue and mystery boxes from thredUP and other companies where the items were from Walmart, JCPenney, and Macy’s in-house brands.
Many of them had really low resale value, especially since they were used items. I ended up donating what I could and tossing the rest.
This was a pleasant change from what I’ve received in the past and confirms my feeling that men’s rescue boxes are better than their other boxes.
2 | Good variety of items
I received dress shirts, pants, jeans, shorts, sweaters, pullovers, jackets, and a suit. These types of items tend to sell for more than basic t-shirts and tanks, which I’ve received in past mystery boxes.
Things I didn’t like about this box
There wasn’t anything I disliked about this box. Some items had obvious wear, but that’s expected when dealing with second-hand clothing and mystery boxes.
You won’t get a box of perfect clothes whether you purchase from thredUP or another company. Even new items with tags can have flaws and often end up in mystery, rescue, and liquidation boxes.
Is this box worth it & would I buy it again?
I would purchase the men’s clothing rescue box again if I received a discount or I had no other way of sourcing men’s items. This is the best thredUP box I’ve received so far, and I think I will make my money back.
I started listing items yesterday and have already sold the Eddie Bauer fleece vest for $25 and the FootJoy shirt for $10.
I estimate making at least $70 in profit after commission/fees and the cost of goods are removed. Seventy dollars isn’t a lot of profit for 10-13 items but not bad for a few hours of work in my free time.
There’s no guarantee that future boxes will be as good as this one. As with most thredUP rescue boxes, I suggest purchasing them more for the entertainment value than for profit.
You may get lucky and make hundreds of dollars off a box. More than likely though, you will make less profit or maybe even lose money on it.
I’ll be back in a few months to update you on how the box sells.
Questions & tips on rescue boxes
1 | Check the rescue box page regularly
If you want to purchase a rescue box, check the thredUP rescue box page regularly. The boxes are restocked at any time of the day. The most popular ones sell out quickly. I would check at least daily if I wanted to get one of the most popular boxes.
I purchased this box on July 5th. The only option for the men’s clothing box was 10 lb at $50. When I started writing this post on July 20th, the only option for men’s clothing was 25 lb at $110. The men’s box was sold out when I checked the next day on July 21st.
2 | Does thredUP wash clothes before selling?
Like most thrift stores, thredUP does not wash clothes before selling them. I have several reasons for believing this: 1) an absurd water bill, 2) I’ve received obviously unwashed clothes, and 3) thredUP asks people to send in clean items.
Can you imagine their water bill if they washed everything?! They’d add wear to many items or ruin items because washing can do that, particularly if the items are delicate or dry clean only. New clothes with tags can’t be washed either.
From the contents of this rescue box alone, it’s apparent the items have not been washed. I’ve received items now and in the past that had odors or hair on them. I accept this as a part of second-hand buying and selling and wash the clothes myself.
Wash your clothes before you wear them!
3 | Are rescue boxes refundable?
Unfortunately, rescue boxes are not refundable or not returnable in full or partially. Know that you might get a great box with items that will make you a profit or you might get junk and lose money.
4 | Can I use thredUP Rewards points for free shipping on rescue boxes?
You can’t use any Reward points you’ve earned toward free shipping on rescue boxes. But shipping was reasonable at $6.10 for this box, and you can use any thredUP credit you have toward purchasing and shipping a rescue box as I did here.
Have you purchased a thredUp men’s clothing rescue box? What did you receive and how did it resell for you?
