Wantable Style Edit Review: Is It Worth It? (2022)

While browsing online one evening, I came across an ad for Wantable, an online styling service for women. I liked several of the clothing pieces in their advertisement, so I signed up to see what it’s all about. After all, I could use a few new pieces to round out my wardrobe. Was it worth it? Read on to learn how Wantable works, what I received in my Wantable Style Edit, my thoughts on the items, and things to know before you try it.

What is Wantable?

Wantable is a men’s and women’s online personal styling service that sends themed style boxes based on your style, size, budget, and their styling expertise.

The company provides several types of curations (called edits) including seasonal or limited-time ones. Each edit contains 7 items. Here are a few edits I’ve come across:

  • Women’s Style Edit

  • Every Women Edit

  • Spring Break Style Edit

  • Saturday Active Edit

  • Spring It On Edit

  • Sleep & Body Edit

  • Seasonal Staples Style Edit

  • WFH Style Edit

  • Men’s Active Edit

How much does Wantable cost?

Wantable’s styling fee is $20. This is credited when you purchase something from the box.

It may be a little more than $20 if you pay tax on it. I paid $21.98.

Wantable is a subscription service, so you can receive boxes once at any frequency from back-to-back to every 3 months. You can receive multiple boxes at once too by ordering from multiple available themes. So I can receive a style edit, Saturday active edit, and a sleep & body edit all at once and pay $60 for the styling of them.

Note that shipping to you and back to Wantable is free, so you’re only paying the styling fee with each edit.

The cost of the clothes depends on the items that you receive. This will depend on the price ranges you selected for the items when you filled out your style survey. More on this below.

How does Wantable work?

  1. Sign up & take a style quiz

  2. Visit the Stream

  3. Wantable sends you 7 items

  4. Try before you buy

  5. Buy what you want to keep

  6. Send back the items you don’t want

Sign up & take the style quiz

I paid the $20 styling fee for my first box, but I signed up with a referral code that provides $25 off my first purchase.

So you’ll have to pay any styling fees, but the referral bonus is worth it because it goes toward anything you purchase from a box later.

Once you sign up, you take a quiz that will help the stylist select items for your style, size, and preferences. The quiz is detailed covering

  • Your size for jackets, shirts, pants, shoes, etc.

  • Your body proportions for art, torso, hip, etc. (e.g., narrow, broad, average)

  • How often your stylist should send trendy items, night-out items, etc.

  • How you feel about different styles (e.g., classic, glam, rock, boho)

  • How you like your clothes to fit

  • How often you want to receive items in various price ranges

  • How you feel about various colors and patterns

You can leave an order note, which your stylist will read for that box. You can leave an account note, which appears on every order. There’s a place for your Pinterest board as well.

I used the total 800 and 1200 character spaces allowed to share that I was looking for quality tops, sweaters, pants, dresses, and jumpsuits that I can wear for nicer events. My favorite colors to wear are black, gray, blues, and pinks.

I noted celebrities whose body types and styles I matched or liked. I shared things I don’t want such as blazers, collared shirts, cropped tops, and office wear. I wear scrubs to work every day, so I don’t need or want these items.

Visit the Stream

The Stream is a page where you can view Wantable’s items that match your preferences. You can filter items by type like dresses and jackets, read the descriptions of the items that interest you, and request or decline them. The items you request go on your wishlist.

There’s no guarantee that you will get the items that you requested. It depends on what they have available at the time your box is put together.

While this step is optional, it’s a good way to see what types of items are available and a great way to request items you want.

I liked this step because it would give me a better chance of liking my box. I found 8 things that I wanted to receive such as a floral top, a light taupe coat, and a blush pink pullover.

What you’ll find in the Stream

What I received in my Wantable Style Edit

I received 3 tops, 1 sweater, 1 jacket, 1 dress, and 1 pair of pants.

Supply & Demand Beatrice Floral Woven Blouse in Ivory S - Retail: $59

I requested this top, so I was excited to see it in the box. The top fits my style of feminine, floral, and pink clothing. Too bad this was too big on me. I should have ordered the XS, but I didn’t know which size would fit better.

Thread & Supply Utility Jacket in Ice Grey S - Retail: $68

I was probably most excited to see this item in the box after eyeing it in my Stream, but it wasn’t as I expected. The jacket was a single thin layer so it was more like a shirt. I don’t think it provides much coverage from any level of cold.

I’d only wear it on warm days when I would probably already be fine wearing short sleeves, a long-sleeve top, or a sweater.

Although the size small fit, the cut and material were so that I couldn’t move or raise my arms well. The jacket was kind of stiff and the whole thing including my shirt underneath moved up when I raised my arms a bit.

I couldn’t wear a sweatshirt under it either because it would’ve been too tight. So maybe it was a little too small?

Democracy V-Neck Shirttail Hem Knit Top in Off White S - Retail: $78

This shirt was pretty with an extra bit of material at the shoulders to give it a puffed look. It didn’t look good on me though. It was also the most expensive item in the box and too expensive for an otherwise plain shirt, so I returned this.

Gentle Fawn Tucker Sweater in Merlot S - Retail: $79 (On Sale: $59.25)

I liked this sweater because of its simple v-neck style and rich merlot color. I could see this being flattering on many people. I returned it because it was too big and had a noticeable pull or run in the fabric already.

When you’re short and/or petite, oversized items can overwhelm you. That’s sort of the sense I got with this sweater. I probably would’ve been better off with an XS.

Lemon Tart Eros Dress in Black S - Retail: $88 (On Sale: $44)

This was a plain soft black dress. It was on sale for $44, which made me consider keeping it. I definitely wouldn’t spend $88 on it seeing as I could probably find something similar at Target or another similar store for much less. In the end, I returned it as I don’t think I would wear it much.

W. by Wantable Brushed Rib Surplice Fitted Top in Dark Charcoal - Retail: $59

I signed up for Wantable hoping to receive some pieces I would love, and this was one of them.

The style of this top including the v-neck, surplice ribbed front, and gray color are all things I love and that suit me. It’s appropriate for business casual wear or while out to lunch on the weekend.

The price was reasonable too because of the $25 credit I got for signing up and the $20 styling fee credited toward a purchase.

Jag Jeans Cecilia Capri in Navy 2: Retail: $64

These pants were comfortable with their elastic waist but too big and too long for me. I wrote to customer service requesting to exchange it for another size. Unfortunately, they didn’t have my size in stock. So this was an item that maybe could have been a keeper but ultimately was not.

Buy what you want to keep

Wantable makes it easy for you to purchase what you want to keep. The company sent me an email when my box was tracked as delivered. I followed the link in the email, purchased what I wanted, and provided feedback on the rest.

I ended up purchasing only the gray W. by Wantable surplice top. It was a good deal at just over $15 because I had a $25 bonus from using a referral link to sign up and had already paid the $20+ styling fee.

Note that Wantable provides a discount if you keep 5 or more items. You’ll receive 20% off your entire purchase. That’s a good deal if you love the box you received.

Send back the items you don’t want

The box came with a large prepaid poly mailer to send unwanted clothes back. I had five days to decide which clothes I wanted.

I received the box on Thursday, so it needed to be back in the mail by the following Tuesday. If I wanted extra time, I could go to my profile online and request it. That’s a nice option if you’re out of town or just too busy during the week and want to wait until the weekend to try out your clothes.

Pros & Cons of the Wantable Style Edit

Pros

1) You can request items

A huge perk of Wantable is that you can request items that you want. You may not receive all or any of them because they may not be available at the time your box is put together, but you can at least see what’s available and request items that you want. I received 3 of the 8 items I requested. Note that you can’t preview and swap things out of an upcoming box as you can with some other companies, so the contents of the box will be a surprise.

2) Items were spot on my style

My stylist did a great job selecting things that were my style. I liked every item I received, even if it didn’t fit me or look good on me when I eventually tried it on.

The stylist nailed the color scheme too. Every item was a color that I would wear in everyday life.

3) Some items were on sale

Two of the 7 items I received were on sale. I don’t mind paying full price for an item that I like and will wear a lot, but I like paying less if I can. Make a note of this in your comments to your stylist if you’re on a budget and only looking for the best deals.

4) Lots of edits (boxes) to try

If you love having a stylist pick and send items to you, Wantable is a great option because there are so many boxes to try. They have new boxes regularly such as those based on seasons. You could probably have a box coming to you week after week if you wanted.

I’m looking forward to my next Wantable Style Edit with my fingers crossed for more of the items I requested. I want to try some of the other edits too.

Cons

1) Sizing is a challenge

While Wantable clothing comes in various sizes, the style quiz and the items show that this service is mostly meant for people who fit mainstream sizes. The only thing they really ask you in the quiz is your size for tops, dresses, etc. and your proportions such as short, average, or long torso. Then anything you order auto-populates to those sizes.

It can be challenging to find well-fitting clothes through this service if you’re shorter, more petite, taller, or larger than most people. I only saw one item listed as petite size after scrolling through more than 100 items.

Also, I often wear a size 0 or 2 or XS or S depending on the brand and item. I’m considered between sizes on Wantable. A 0 is an XS while a 2/4 is a small.

I knew this would make ordering their clothes challenging because I would fit an XS in some clothes and a small in others. But their service automatically populated my size as a small for everything because of my style quiz. I could select another size, but I would be guessing what would fit me.

I wrote about this issue in my order and account note and hoped that the stylist would recognize the items that needed to be sized down. I received a small in every item, even the ones that were loose or oversized, so I don’t think my issue was even considered.

I know I can’t expect that much when paying a $20 styling fee, but that was a little disappointing. This service feels more like they want you to fit their trendy mainstream-size clothes versus working with you to find something that fits you well.

I felt that another styling service I tried called Short Story Box really considered what I wrote to them and tried to find the perfect items for me, and it was only $25 for the service. That’s probably because Short Story Box specializes in styling petite women, so they know a petite person’s pain points and can address them.

2) Prices are high

Wantable asks you to choose the price ranges for the items you want to receive. The items start at the $50-$100 range. There’s also the $100-$150 range and $150 and up range.

While $50 to $100 may be a reasonable price in retail, I think it’s expensive for some of the items such as a plain t-shirt or blouse or sweatpants.

The brands aren’t up-scale. The clothes are comparable to items you’d find at Target or Macys. Some of the brands are

  • Thread & Supply

  • Kut from the Kloth

  • Z Supply

  • Kensie

  • Gentle Fawn

  • Lush

  • Blank NYC

  • Bobeau

If you’re looking to pay less than retail prices, you might want to let your stylist know to send you sale items or you may be better off shopping elsewhere.

3) Clothes are casual

The clothes are casual in style. Some items could be worn in a casual work environment, but I didn’t see anything sharper that you could wear in a more formal work environment such as a law office.

I was hoping to receive a dress that I could wear on a dinner date or to an evening performance. Unfortunately, there wasn’t office attire, cocktail party wear, or formal clothing in the Stream for the Style Edit. There were lots of t-shirts and casual tops, hoodies, sweaters, and sweatshirts.

If you’re looking for office wear or formal clothing, Wantable is not the right subscription service. It’s more for casual and loungewear. You might want to try Nordstrom’s Trunk Club.

Final verdict

Wantable was worth it for me. The experience of filling out a style quiz, looking through the Stream, anticipating what I was going to receive, and then trying out the clothes was well worth the $20 styling fee.

It was even more worth it because I got a top I love at a discount by using the styling fee and my sign-up bonus toward it.

I’m glad I got something I liked out of it, but I’m unsure about ordering from the company again in the future. I might try another subscription service that’s a better fit for petite people or more formal clothes.
